Meet Kim Whittemore | Digital Artist

Since I was a little girl I’ve always wanted to be an artist. I was never the best artist in class but I was always trying and hours of bliss would pass by without me noticing. I finally found my niche and passion in 2012 (decades later) when I started creating surreal images with Adobe Photoshop. What a game changer for me. Suddenly, whatever I could imagine could be realized in a 2D image.

My years of various art-based projects, jobs and careers have left me with quite a lengthy skill set. Some of the software I use for current projects is Photoshop, Illustrator, inDesign, Lightroom, Premiere, Muse (all Adobe products) and Pixologic zBrush. The 3D sculpting (zBrush) is new for me and many of the animals in my St. Thomas Greetings collection of cards (The Funny Farm) were created in zBrush. I also just finished illustrating my first children’s book.

Imagery in any form, to me, is a platform to evoke an emotion and in a world where negativity and chaos seem to get all the attention, I prefer to live on the happy side of life. A question I get a lot is “where do you get your ideas from?”. That is the million dollar question that really has no specific answer. I think it’s fun to try and create a scenario that isn’t logical, but looks real. Maybe I like the challenge, or maybe I like the process…I’m not sure.

It all comes down to this…I love to see people smile and escape reality even for just a brief moment. When I’ve had the awesome opportunity to see the reactions of people viewing my art, it really makes my heart sing. I see many smiles and there is nothing better than that.
